Pride and the Press: LGBT+ History and Cambridge University Press

July 27, 2019 @ 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm

Cambridge University Press is hosting an exhibition exploring the LGBT+ history of the Press and queer history more broadly through the lens of the Press and its publishing. Curated to mark Pride Month and the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising that gave rise to first LGBT+ Pride march, the exhibition has now been extended, so we are delighted to be staging two more public tours at 12.15 on Saturday 27th July and Saturday 3rd August (which are free, but ticketed). The exhibition, curated by Ian McIver, is displayed in the Press Museum, located within the CUP offices in the University Printing House.

Focusing on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the exhibition draws on the Press’s archives, publishing and the recollections of current and former staff. It features facsimiles of letters from famous LGBT+ figures, such as Alan Turing, E. M. Forster, Siegfried Sassoon and Vita Sackville-West, as well as less well-known LGBT+ individuals based in Cambridge.

Cambridge University Press is the oldest publishing house in the world and this exhibition, exploring its LGBT+ history, is the first of its kind. The event will consist of a brief introduction to the exhibition from the curator, before a chance to explore the museum and tour of part of the offices. As the Press Museum is a small space and the offices are not usually open at the weekend, you must register in advance to attend (your registration details will be deleted after the event). The tours will begin from reception and more may be added depending on demand. The tour is step-free. If you have any queries, please contact the organiser at Sign-up here for a free tour:
